Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762), Italian painter & print-maker of the Baroque period. In Dresden, he became known for his imaginary portraits of figures displaying various emotions, such as the so-called Portrait of a Maid (Warsaw, National Museum). Admirably composed and coloured, these works are painted with great sensitivity of observation. Died in St Petersburg, where he had traveled to paint for the Russian court.
